Burnout (Orange)

Naming Danger Jones shades is one of our favorite jobs. How many brands get to throw around names like “Sweet & Sour” or “Whiskey Night” on any given Tuesday. But when it came down to the right name for our Orange, we found ourselves drawn to the lyric, “It's better to burn out than fade away” courtesy of the great Neil Young.

Starrider (Yellow)

When creating a brand, one of the hardest exercises to go through is to create a brand name. It has to feel like it encompasses the essence of who we are, it has to speak to the artists we create with and for, and of course, it has to be something not already used. Before Danger Jones was Danger Jones, Starrider was one of the few names that we just had a hard time crossing off the list. So when it came time to name our bold, bright yellow, it was a no-brainer.

Empire (Green)

Something about Empire’s artwork hit us all differently the first time we saw it. It was weird and cool and made everyone question, “what’s he trying to say with this?” We wondered what the trees meant to him, or if the neck piece was an adornment or a restraint, and if she was regal or magical. We asked none of our questions though, and in the end, we figured that as with all art, it was up to the audience to decide on their own.

Originally named Fallen Angel, this bold purple was the very first color to ever appear on social media. Since purple is absolutely the most commonly requested color behind the chair, especially for those new to creative color, we thought it only fitting to kick off our entire line with LIBERTINE.

Of all the ideas we had for Oblivion, this was definitely one that came from the brain of the artist. With so many directions it could go, we fell in love with this delicate take on the subject’s peace with the escape of consciousness.

Hysteria (Berry)

Oftentimes this color can be a bit challenging with semis. Artists are after a pinkish purple, but once applied, the warmth in the hair just pushes the result too far from purple. So, when formulating Hysteria, we were certain to include just the right amount of violet to accommodate for the unwanted warmth in the canvas, leaving the perfect berry result.

Clear

Clear is a weird one, right? Because it doesn’t have a color of its own. And it’s for that reason that the artwork for Clear came about as it did - with the front featuring television call outs to all those other shades, and the back featuring a collage of the entire collection. Because it is the key instrument to an artist’s ability to customize our shades into any tone they want to create. An integral element of every Danger Jones color bar.

Pavement (Grey)

When Belgian artist, Arno Kiss @arnokiss, sent over his first draft, he prefaced it with a disclaimer that he didn’t want us to worry about how little is on his sketch. And we have to admit, we were definitely a little uncertain. But his portfolio had spoken for itself. And man, was he right. For all four of his Danger Jones pieces, in just a single version, his artwork went from a couple of sketched lines to a complete scene with so much life to them that they felt more like parts of a video than stills. Truly impressive.

Once you get Danger Jones in your hands, you’ll notice that super luxe, soft touch feel of the boxes. However, you’ll also notice that Hotwire and the other neons have a completely different look and feel about them. Adrenaline (Neon Green)

There was no shortage of ideas from South African artist, Simon Brendt @1horsetown, when brainstorming for Adrenaline. And we were about to happily move forward with an illustration similar to what is seen on the box now, except it featured women skydiving. But at the very last second, David came up with an idea to change them to flying jetpacks, and that sealed the deal for all of us.

Vertigo (Neon Blue)

Vertigo was one of those pieces that we just couldn’t put our finger on the missing ingredient. Everything the artist had put together was super cool and we loved the direction, but we just needed “something”. In the end, it was actually a Blink 182 poster that inspired us to consider laser eyes. And that was it! We were sold.

Exotica (Light Purple)

This poster, featuring a happy little tropical carving, was created by Hawaiian artist Bryan Yap @byap. But what people might not realize, is that Bryan was just a limitless source of ideas with incredible sketches for so much of our range. Not only did he create the artwork for Exotica, but he also happens to be the artist for seven other pieces, including Oblivion, Solitude, Starrider, Empire, Clear, Ray Gun, and Hysteria.

Cheap Date (Light Pink)

There are so many moving parts in creating a color line, including what we know artists want out of the color’s base, what shades they need, what fragrance they can enjoy day after day and hour after hour behind the chairs. Cheap Date happened to be the one that was key in that fragrance testing as each new fragrance came back mixed into our pastel pink. With an unbelievable number of versions, customizing, combining, and diluting different fragrances, we had finally locked it in, also making Cheap Date our first approved shade in the collection.

Poolside (Light Blue)

Pastel blue is just one of those semis colors that causes problems for artists constantly. It just seems like no matter how light you get the canvas, you’re still left with a hint of green from the slightest natural warmth - to the point that adding in a little canceling violet to a pastel blue application is a pretty common practice. Knowing this though, we were determined to pack Poolside with enough pigment to fight the warmth, while still offering a pastel result. And when it came down to it, that became our expectation for all of our pastels: to actually offer full coverage, without any spottiness or hollowness - a feat artists are raving about daily!

Simpatico (Light Peach)

Chelsea Bunn @good.scary, the Columbus, Ohio artist behind Simpatico, originally created two options that were both so cool, they were almost impossible to choose between. One option had that adorable cowgirl peach rocking out with a guitar in the desert, the other had her relaxing by her campfire roasting marshmallows. We finally just had to land on one, so campfire it is! And since it was so loved among our team, it became one of the first pieces that we just knew we had to feature in our fashion line.
