1. Prep Your Hair and Workspace
• Hair condition: Start with clean, dry, and thoroughly detangled hair. Brush your hair straight back so no tangles remain.
• Gather extra supplies: You will need to provide your own hair bleach powder and developer (mixing cream), plus a non-metallic mixing bowl.
• Protect yourself: Put on the included disposable shampoo cape and disposable gloves.
2. Put On and Secure the Highlighting Cap
• Fit the cap: Pull the Colortrak Highlighting Cap tightly and snugly down over your head so there are no loose gaps or air pockets near your scalp.
• Tie it down: Secure the cap by tying the chin straps firmly into a bow so it won't shift or slide around while you work.
3. Pull Hair Strands Through the Cap
• Choose your density: Decide how bold or subtle you want your highlights. For subtle dimension, pull hair through select/circled holes; for a heavier, brighter look, pull hair through every hole.
• Use the hook: Take the dual-purpose highlighting needle, hold it relatively flat against the cap with the hook facing upward, and gently poke through a hole.
• Pull the strand: Hook a small, clean section of hair and pull the entire strand straight out through the hole so the length and ends stick out. Avoid grabbing massive chunks to keep the look natural.
• Comb through: Run a small comb or brush gently through the pulled strands of hair to straighten them out and remove any loops or knots before applying bleach.
4. Mix and Apply the Color or Bleach
• Mix the formula: Using the mixing spatula end of your tool, blend your bleach powder and developer in a bowl until smooth.
• Paint the strands: Use the 2.25-inch firm bristle brush to saturate the pulled-out hair strands evenly from root to tip.
5. Process and Rinse
• Wait for development: Check the color progress periodically according to the instructions on your bleach or lightener (typically 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your target shade).
• Rinse thoroughly: Rinse the bleach out of the pulled strands with cool or lukewarm water before taking the cap off, then gently untie and lift the cap off your head. Shampoo and condition your hair as normal.
